Thol Lake Sanctuary situated in Thol Village in Mehsana district near Ahmedabad, Gujarat is a nature lover and birdwatcher's paradise. The freshwater lake of Thol is surrounded by the marshes and was built as an irrigation tank in 1912. The Gaekwad administration constructed the tank, and the Thol Lake has allowed consumers to utilise its water. During that period, India was experiencing a serious water shortage. As a result, the ministers or authorities of the time created this reservoir to provide water for irrigation. Thol Lake received the title of renowned sanctuary in 1988 because it shows how much the area is suitable for the habitat of the avifauna, about 60% of them are waterbirds.
The Thol Lake Sanctuary is also intended to be designated as an Eco-sensitive Zone under the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986. Currently, the Forest and Irrigation Department of the Government of Gujarat looks after the operation and maintenance of the lake.
