History of Porbandar Bird Sanctuary

The history of Porbandar Bird Sanctuary dates back to the year 1988 when the region was declared a bird sanctuary under the governance of the Porbandar Municipality. The area became a sanctuary because many birds were approaching the region from distinct parts of the globe therefore protecting and preserving their habitat. The person who is said to be the pioneer behind the establishment of the sanctuary was a skilled and eminent naturalist, Peter Jackson.

Later in 1990, the Porbandar Bird Sanctuary came under the possession of the Forest Department of Gujarat. The sanctuary even got listed under Section 18 of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 of the Gujarat Government.
