In a video that went viral on social media, a pride of 13 Asiatic Lions can be seen in the vicinity of Gujarat's Gir National Park.
The video shows the pride of lions, mostly young lions and cubs, crossing the road at night. The pride is led by a lioness and is watched over for safety by another lioness who follows the pride towards the end.
Gaining popularity on social media sites, the video garnered a lot of attention from wildlife enthusiasts who were quick to express their amazement at this "extraordinary sight", referring to the size of the pride.
The pride was spotted in Gir Gadhada, a village that falls in the Gir Somnath district, lying in proximity to the Gir National Park. Known to be among the world's only natural habitat of the Asiatic Lions, Gir National Park has made a name for itself with its conservation practices for this big cat species. Today, with due efforts from the side of the authorities, the IUCN Status of the Asiatic Lion on its Red List remains changed. The Asiatic Lion which was earlier categorized as 'endangered' now stands to be under the 'vulnerable' category, signifying positive progress.
