The region of Chhari Dhand is a desert wetland with seasonal climates which results in the region becoming lively during the monsoon season when the wetlands get swampy and habitual for the flora and fauna of the area. During the monsoon months, the area receives water from the north flowing rivers and huge floodplain areas of the surrounding hills. The birdwatchers, nature photographers and ornithologists will find the seasonal desert wetland a perfect destination to witness the varied and unique bird species and other wildlife living in their best form especially in the months of monsoon and winter, especially from November to March.
In the local Kutchi tongue, Chhari means 'salty' and Dhand means 'shallow wetlands', therefore the reserve receives the name. At first, it was decided to name the region 'Kutch Bird Sanctuary' because of its size but later the wetland of Chhari Dhand got recognition in the year 2008 as a 'conservation forest' and is also said to be the first conservation centre of Gujarat state. The Chhari Dhand and its adjoining wetlands come under the protected lands lists of Gujarat and are under consideration for including the region in the Ramsar Site. The increased number of endangered and nearly threatened bird species gives the wetland reserve the chance to accommodate itself under the Ramsar Site.
